Review

‘F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers’ is a remake of the successful F4 Boys Over Flowers series, based on the very famous Japanese manga “Hana Yori Dango”. It is inevitable to compare and find similarities, differences and improvements from the previous versions. Each version has its own cultural nuances that make it unique. The Thai version has achieved comparable success to the Chinese and Korean versions, with a score of 9.6 on Viki (with 68,000 views) and 7.8 on IMDb.

Recommended for a teenage-adult audience, it is interesting to see how it deals with a variety of themes, highlighting above all friendship, family, effort and work. Although comparisons with the other versions are inevitable, if we look at it independently, we find Thai actress Tontawan Tantivejakul, who plays ‘Gorya’, a strong and strong-willed protagonist who prevails her principles above all else.

Gorya will be the spark that ignites and explodes everything, disrupting the lives of the F4, the spoiled children and millionaires who have everything at their fingertips, as opposed to the harsh reality of poverty in Thailand. Little by little we discover each character and their personalities, which make them really different from each other, giving them a complete personality.

Vachirawit Chiva-aree stands out in his role as ‘Thyme’, the overbearing boy to whom no one has ever said ‘NO’ to anything until Gorya arrives and puts him in his place. After many complicated situations, the boy will experience a 180 degree change, or maybe not, there will be surprises and changes in the script at the end that will turn our hearts upside down. You’ll have to watch it to find out what I’m talking about.

From the very first episode, the series engages and surprises, and it certainly entertains. In each chapter it makes you go from laughing to crying and the scenes are dynamic and well linked. There are no filler chapters and there is definitely nothing left over. At the end, it has left the whole team with a good taste in our mouths and a doubt as to whether it will replace the Chinese version, which to date has been our favourite.

Secondary actors who shine

The supporting cast of the Thai series ‘F4 Boys Over Flowers Thailand’ truly enriches the plot, leaving us positively impressed:

Nattawat Jirochtikul (Fourth): He brings Kla Khao, Gorya’s brother, to life. His performance is outstanding, bringing an interesting family dynamic to the series. It’s impossible not to empathise with him, his chemistry with Thyme is evident, making his character endearing.

Cindy Bishop: She plays Roselyn Paramaanantra, Thyme’s ruthless mother. A formidable antagonist, her performance is solid and adds tension, hatred and complexity to the plot. There will be moments where you’ll really come to loathe her and others where you’ll admire her for getting everything she wants in a ruthless and intelligent way.

The members of the F4 group: Vachirawit Chiva-aree (Thyme), Metawin Opas-iamkajorn (Kavin), Hirunkit Changkham (MJ). Each in his or her own role, we thought they were all great, always appearing at the right moment. We especially liked Jirawat Sutivanichsak (Ren). Unlike the Korean version in which we literally ended up hating this character, in the Thai version he captivated us. The conversation he has at the market gate with Gorya is incredible. As an anecdote, look closely at the sign that appears with the name of the market ‘Gu Jun Pyo’, which is the same name as the main character in the Korean version.

We could notice in some chapters the main song of the Korean version as background music and we certainly miss the mythical ‘flying kick’ that in all the versions ends up in the face of the main character. In the Thai version, it is softened and ends up in the stomach.

Why should you watch it?

Have you seen the other versions of ‘F4 Boys Over Flowers’ and thought nothing could surprise you anymore? Get ready, because this version will change your mind and, for sure, change your preferences and inclinations.

The series is very well made, dynamic and the actors do a truly exceptional job. Without a doubt, ‘F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers’ will captivate you and keep you hooked from the very first episode, 100% recommended for F4 fans.
